SEO in Laois
We are based in Ballyroan, a short drive from Portlaoise. This page is about one job: getting a Laois business found by the people already searching for it here. Local search is a different piece of work to national SEO, and for most businesses in the county it is the piece that brings the phone calls.
Most Laois enquiries start on a phone.
Laois is a compact county with one dominant market. Portlaoise draws trade from Abbeyleix, Stradbally, Mountmellick, Portarlington and the villages around them. That concentration matters for search, because a large share of the buying searches done here resolve to a handful of terms with Portlaoise or Laois attached.
What people type is rarely elegant: a service and a place, or a service and the words near me, tapped in by somebody already half decided to ring whoever looks closest and most credible. What comes back is not ten blue links. It is a map with a short list of businesses, then local listings, then the standard results. The businesses in the map get rung first, and plenty of Laois businesses never appear there at all.
Illustrative phrasing, not client data. The pattern is the point: service plus place, typed short, on a phone.
The second thing worth knowing is who holds those results now. A good share belong to businesses with no presence in the county, ranking because their websites are older and better linked, not because they are closer to the customer. That gap can be closed, but only deliberately. Nothing about being in Laois tells Google you are in Laois. Your website, your listing and the rest of the web have to say it, and agree.
Portlaoise first, then the rest of it.
Most of the county's search volume sits in and around the county town, so that is where we usually start. It is not where we stop. If you genuinely work in Mountmellick, Rathdowney or Durrow but your website only says Laois, you are handing those town searches to somebody else.
What the work actually is.
No secret, no switch to flip. Local SEO is a set of unglamorous jobs done properly and kept up. Here is the honest version of each, including what it will not do.
Your Google listing and your website, working as one thing
Your Google Business Profile feeds the map results, and for plenty of Laois businesses it produces more enquiries than the website does. It needs the right primary category, service areas that reflect where you really travel, correct hours, your own photographs, and the same name, address and phone number as your site. When the two disagree, neither is trusted, and getting them to agree is usually the quickest win available.
Pages that name the places you serve
A page that says we cover the midlands will not rank for Portlaoise. A page explaining what you do there, for whom, and how you get there stands a real chance. That does not mean a thin page per town with the name swapped out: Google treats those as doorways and readers see through them. It means proper pages for the places you genuinely work.
The on-site groundwork
Titles and descriptions that read like a person wrote them, headings in order, internal links between related pages, local business structured data, and a site that loads fast on rural coverage. None of it is exciting. All of it is what the ranking systems actually read. The wider method sits on our full SEO service page.
Citations, and the tidying nobody enjoys
Directory listings, chamber pages, industry bodies, supplier sites. Individually each is worth very little. Collectively they are how the web confirms a business of this name, at this address, on this number, exists in Laois. Most of the job is correction, not creation: finding entries carrying an old address or a dead mobile, and getting every mention to agree.
Reviews, earned rather than manufactured
Reviews affect where you land in the map results and whether anyone clicks once you are there. There is no clever route around it: ask at the right moment, make it easy on a phone, reply to what people write. We can build the process and write the ask. We will not write reviews, and any agency offering to is a liability rather than a service.
What local SEO will not do
It will not put you first for a national term in a competitive market, and it will not fill a diary next week. Better to say that now than in month four. If you need enquiries immediately, Google Ads is the honest answer while the local work builds underneath it.
Deliverables, evidence and a monthly report.
Local SEO is ongoing work, so it is quoted monthly and it has a fixed shape. Before anything is changed we write down where you stand, so what follows is measured against a real starting point rather than a feeling.
Baseline
We record your current positions for the county and town terms that matter, what Search Console already shows for your site, the state of your Google Business Profile, and where your name, address and phone number appear across the web. That record is what everything afterwards is measured against.
Groundwork
Profile categories, service areas, hours and photographs corrected. Titles, headings, internal links and local business markup fixed on the site. Wrong and duplicate listings tidied up. This is the part that can move the map results quickly, because it is completion rather than competition.
Build
Proper pages for the places and services you genuinely cover, written rather than duplicated town by town. Citations added where they are worth having. A review process you can keep up without being nagged. Organic positions usually start to move in this window, not before it.
Report
One short report, sent by email: positions for the agreed terms against the baseline, the calls, direction requests and website clicks your Google profile recorded, Search Console clicks and impressions, then what was done and what is next. No dashboard you never log into.
Scope is agreed in writing before the first invoice: the pages, listings and hours covered each month, and the terms being targeted. Anything outside it is quoted separately, including ad budget and management, a full website rebuild, print and brand work. If your site is too slow or too broken for local SEO to earn its keep, we will say so and price that fix first rather than bill a retainer against it.

CounterPest, found for the counties it actually covers
CounterPest Ireland is an independent pest control specialist working out of the midlands, covering Laois, Offaly, Tipperary, Kildare and the counties around them. It is an urgent, trust-led purchase, so the site was built around the three questions a worried customer asks first: do you cover me, do you know what you are doing, and how do I reach you now.
Coverage got a section of its own, county by county, so a reader in Portlaoise sees their own area named rather than a vague claim about the midlands. The local search groundwork was laid during the build rather than bolted on later, targeting the towns in the real service area.
CPS Plant Hire
A Laois plant and machinery hire business. This was a web design project rather than an SEO engagement, and we will not pretend otherwise. What it put in place is the foundation local search depends on: clear structure, sensible page titles and a fast mobile-first front end for contractors browsing from a site.

Another Laois client, and a membership platform rather than a brochure site. We built a single searchable feed of public construction opportunities, filterable by category and region, structured so dense listings stay readable and a first-time visitor has an obvious route into membership. Structure at that scale keeps a large site legible.

Who this is and is not for.
Local SEO suits some Laois businesses and not others. It saves everybody time to be plain about which, before a quote is written.
A good fit
- You serve Laois or the wider midlands, and most of your work comes from inside an hour's drive.
- You already get enquiries by word of mouth and want the same customers finding you through search too.
- You have a website that works, or are about to build one, and want the local groundwork done properly.
- You can spare an hour a month to answer questions, approve copy and ask customers for reviews, and give the work six months.
Probably not us
- You want a guaranteed first position. Nobody controls Google's results, so nobody can sell you that.
- You need the phone ringing this week. That is a job for Google Ads, and we will say so rather than take the retainer.
- You sell nationally with no real local angle. Start with our full SEO service instead.
- You are shopping purely on price. We are not the cheapest, and our website cost guide is upfront about how we price work.

Do I need a Laois SEO agency, or will any agency do?
Where your agency sits is not itself a ranking factor, and it would be dishonest to say otherwise. What it changes is the work: knowing which towns feed Portlaoise, knowing who you are compared against on a phone screen, and being able to sit down with you. Brandstart is in Ballyroan, Co. Laois. When we checked the Laois results for "seo laois" on 5 September 2026, our own profile was showing in the local pack, and the work behind that is the work we would do on your listing.
How long before I see anything for Laois searches?
County competition is lighter than national, which helps. Profile work can move the map results within weeks, because you are completing a listing rather than earning authority. Organic positions are slower: typically three to six months of steady work, longer in a crowded trade. Anyone quoting a few weeks for the top of the page is guessing.
Will this get me into the map results for Portlaoise?
It gives you a proper shot, and it is the right target for most businesses here. One constraint is worth knowing: map results weigh how close the searcher is to you, so trading twenty minutes out is harder than being on Main Street. A complete profile, consistent details and genuine reviews close that distance.
I already have a Google Business Profile. Is that enough on its own?
It is often the most valuable thing a local business owns, and usually half finished: missing categories, a service area that does not match reality, no photographs since the day it was created, hours wrong at Christmas. Fixing that is worth doing on its own. But profile and website are read together, so a strong listing pointing at a vague site still leaks enquiries.
What does local SEO cost, and do you work outside Laois?
It is ongoing work, so normally monthly rather than a one-off, and the cost depends on your trade and how fast you want to move. We quote against a plan, not a package. And yes, we work well beyond the county. See our full SEO service for the method, the cost guide for pricing, or the areas we cover.
